The Teacher’s Position — and the UAICS Answer

This may be a first in the history of education: teachers asked to teach a subject that did not exist when
they were at school.

What we see in classrooms is one gap with two faces. Technically capable teachers are often unfamiliar with cognitive
development and the softer crafts of the classroom; teachers deeply versed in child development often hesitate before the
technology. AI education sits exactly on the boundary between those two professions — it demands both "how a model is
trained" and "how a ten-year-old thinks". This is no teacher’s deficiency. It is the first time the era has demanded more than
any single teacher-training tradition was designed to give.

And meanwhile, teachers teach every day. There is no sabbatical in which to acquire the other half of a profession; the
students are already in the room, having finished yesterday’s homework with generative AI.

UAICS teacher training begins from one design principle: we do not turn every teacher into an "AI technician".

A teacher’s passion and existing expertise are AI education’s most precious assets, not blank space to be overwritten. A
literature teacher examining bias in AI-generated text with her class is teaching AI. A pastoral teacher exploring "is this my
idea or the AI’s?" is teaching AI. A computing teacher training a first classifier is teaching AI. UAICS exists so that every
teacher can stand on their own strengths and walk toward the boundary — knowing, at each step, where they are.

Training Structure

UAICS teacher training opened in July 2026. It is organised by the four certification blocks, each an independent stage:
teachers choose their entry by the ages they teach and the strengths they bring, and those who complete training and pass
its assessment hold the corresponding UAICS teaching certificate.

Two teacher tracks

Training distinguishes two destinations. Cross-curricular AI teachers bring AI into the subject they already teach, extending
their existing profession into the AI era. Specialist AI teachers teach UAICS courses and supervise projects outright. The two
are equally vital: breadth reaches every classroom through the first; depth stands on the second.

The shared core: Learn with AI

Whatever the block, every teacher takes the same core module: guiding students in genuine collaboration with generative AI
— recognising cognitive load, preventing cognitive hollowing, coaching metacognition. This is what separates UAICS training
from generic "AI tools" workshops: we train not teachers who can use the tools, but teachers who understand what happens
to a child in front of them. The module maps to the C1 and C3 domains of the Cultivated Competencies Framework (currently
in classroom trial); once formally published, teacher assessment will reference its staged descriptors directly.

Enrolment

Training is open to individual teachers and school groups.
