Founding Editorial: The People Standing Before the Wave

This Board did not begin with a document. It began with a scene that kept repeating: teachers, parents and children standing before the same wave — knowing AI matters, not knowing where to begin.

The teachers’ helplessness is concrete. They teach every day, yet are asked to teach a subject that did not exist when they studied; those fluent in the technology lack grounding in child development, those grounded in children lack the technology — and the students have already finished yesterday’s homework with generative AI. The parents’ helplessness is concrete too: they cannot let their children not learn, yet cannot tell education from salesmanship. And society at large has not yet built the civic awareness to see what unqualified AI courses might quietly cost a child. How large is this wave? Demis Hassabis, founder of DeepMind, offers an estimate worth recording: AI is overhyped in the short term and underestimated in the long term; its transformation may be ten times the scale of the Industrial Revolution, at ten times the speed. One need not accept the whole estimate — if half of it holds, education has no case for standing still.

AI is the most powerful tool humanity has ever held, and for that reason double-edged. It can erode a young mind — fragmenting attention, outsourcing thought, thinning self-worth. It can equally become a child’s finest instrument — amplifying creativity, opening the world, offering a one-to-one learning companion. Which edge a child meets is decided not by the technology, but by the adults around them.

So we believe this is a moment for education professionals to step forward — not to manufacture anxiety, not to sell shortcuts, but to do the quiet necessary work: gathering scattered research and international frameworks into a verifiable standard; writing "how to teach it" into teacher training that starts from each teacher’s strengths; writing "how to protect" into curriculum guidance, so that cognitive development and safeguarding are built-in requirements rather than marketing lines.
